<br />MCPD Parks and Recreation Report Aug/Oct 2007 Hilo meeting <br />Recreation Division <br />Observed 2 teens with autism in a beginner Judo class. Personal assistants were present but <br />did not participate in the class. The teens were attentive and seemed to enjoy themselves! <br />Working with Sensei on Inclusive Judo Class for teens and adults to premier in January. <br />Children at Mt View gym created Halloween decorations for the Meals on Wheels Program for <br />home bound seniors. Our Puna District serves the highest number of children with disabilities. <br />Created activity stations in Yano Hall (Kona) for participants and staff from Full Lifes Learning <br />Center in an open program of billiards, mural painting, mat work & stretching to music, <br />basketball, picnic, and socializing. The group plans to visit quarterly. <br />Supplied DCABs parking stall and access aisle warning cards to all recreation staff to promote <br />a proactive role in parking enforcement at each park site. <br />Aquatics Division <br />Conducted an Aquatics Orientation for Goodwill which included personal assistants, <br />administrative staff, and participants. Thirty people attended. <br />Observed Kona Community Aquatics Center (KCAC) w/ Teri for modification requests for <br />handrails and an adult changing table in the mens locker room. <br />Research to update aquatics registration forms. The goal is to provide staff with basic health <br />and safety information for emergencies. Do not intend to require a medical release or doctors <br />permission in order to participate. <br />Parks Maintenance Division <br />I met with the district supervisors of the Parks Maintenance Division to discuss the role Parks <br />Maintenance plays in daily access issues. I drafted an ADA checklist to accompany the weekly <br />facility safety inspections. The checklists purpose will be to reinforce access awareness with <br />staff and to monitor sites to improve accessibility in our grounds and facilities. <br />Panaewa Complex <br />Observed petting Zoo. Offered ADA Awareness training for Friends of the Zoo docents. I met <br />with staff and FOZ board members to discuss access issues and volunteer opportunities for <br />people of all abilities. Volunteers with disabilities currently serve Zoo programs. <br />Interagency Collaboration <br />I organized a meeting to discuss the Access Boards new Guidelines for Outdoor Developed <br />Areas (open for public comment until Oct 18). Lisa Duwall of Volcano National Park, Glenn <br />TaguchiofDeptofLand&NaturalResources,andTeriSpinola-Campbellattended.Itwas <br />agreed to submit comments separately and to meet again for future discussions. <br />Elderly Activities Division (EAD) <br />AssessedthetemporaryplantationbuildingforaccessibilityfortheSeniorNutritionSitein <br />Paauilo. The seniors were displaced due to earthquake damage. Their previous site will be <br />demolished. <br />
