<br />ADA Coordinator Activities <br />July 2008 <br />ADA - Title II & S. 504 <br />Disability Rights Hawaii forwarded a complaint from a resident that certain <br />sidewalks in Hilo are inaccessible; wrote to complainant to get more <br />information, but letter was returned; <br />Responded to an inquiry from Public Relations Specialist in Department of <br />Public Works regarding usage of booklet, “Making Temporary Events <br />Accessible.”; <br />Reviewed sample application for paratransit services for Administrator – <br />Mass Transit and provided comments; <br />Followed up with individual who could not use new wheelchair lift at Kona <br />Community Aquatic Center and raised maintenance issues regarding <br />temporary lift with Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Division; <br />Tried to find a person in Kailua-Kona who requested accessible pedestrian <br />signals from Traffic Division, but was unsuccessful; <br />Forwarded a complaint regarding no sidewalk on Kapiolani St. at <br />Ponahawai in Hilo to Engineering Division in Public Works; <br />Drafted comments on service animals to submit to Department of Justice <br />during proposed rulemaking to Title II regulations; <br />Discussed use of “Segways” as mobility aids with Mass Transit Administrator <br />and forwarded him Department of Transportation’s information on the <br />subject; <br />Tested an all terrain wheelchair (Hippocampe) at Richardson’s Ocean <br />Beach Park with Recreation Specialist and Battalion Chief – Water Safety <br />Officers; <br />Met with an individual who requested a modification to a traffic light so <br />he could push the button for the pedestrian signal with the footrest of his <br />wheelchair to test a prototype; <br />Consulted with Bill Hecker, ADA expert, on various issues regarding the <br />Department of Parks and Recreation Transition Plan, Curb Cuts Transition <br />Plan and maintenance of sidewalks; <br />Listened to a web cast on ADA rules with other County employees; <br />Participated in a meeting regarding ADA improvements to East Hawaii <br />Cultural Center; <br />Informed a County resident that Stipulated Agreement in Russell v. the <br />County of Hawaii (curb cuts) prohibited us from doing an inventory of <br />sidewalks and a sidewalk Transition Plan. <br />Title III <br />Concluded investigation of a medical facility in Kailua-Kona for non- <br />compliant ADA parking with no findings to support violation of the County <br />Code; sent letter to complainant, who subsequently spoke to property <br />owners and resolved the issue himself; <br />Responded to an inquiry from an individual who asked about services for <br />people with disabilities; <br /> <br />
