Now we're not here to talk about the editorial that Mr. Bishop wrote, <br />or Mr. Bishop's opinions about how Mr. Bishop might have interpreted this letter. We <br />have the letter. Now I think one way to look at this letter, which to me is what I'm <br />concentrating on here, is that apparently there were comments made in a -1'm just <br />looking at the letter —there were comments made in this forum that was videoed, and Mr. <br />Ashida talked about his disappointment to hear these conflict of interest. All right, then — <br />fine, I mean, he's defending his office, apparently, and that's his job. So 1 have no <br />problem with him writing this letter on County time. So we get to the content of this <br />letter, and I think in order to have an ethics violation really be strong, I really believe <br />there has to be —if somebody is going to politicize something, there has to be some intent. <br />But when I read this letter, and 1 read it at home, and 1 don't take pieces out, I don't <br />editorialize the letter, I see that Mr. Ashida is referring to all three people —I don't know <br />if there are others, it doesn't say whether there were others present or not —and 1 did not <br />view the video that we're talking about here, any kind of video —he says —he almost <br />seems to be making a capsule of what Mr. Joseph said and that Ms. Naeole— " Wayne <br />said it all " —so Mr. Ashida is assuming that she's concurring with whatever Mr. <br />Joseph— <br />JOSEPH. - -Mr. Ashida's right here. We— <br />L UM: - -Yes- <br />JOSEH: - -don't have to make assumptions— <br />L UM: - -and then— <br />JOSEPH: - -He can tell us for himself— <br />L UM: - -and then, the third one is, "Gary Safarik, having served as a Council member, <br />understood'' past tense — "the legal issue discussed above. " And then he reiterates <br />those —what our jobs are, volunteer boards and commissions. So 1 don't see any intent <br />here to say you— that's different what people would have heard had they been in the <br />district at this. There's nothing inhere that tells me that Mr. Ashida is saying you should <br />make up your mind one way or the other, because if the people agreed with whatever you <br />were saying, whatever Ms. Naeole was saying, whatever Mr. Safarik was saying- <br />15 <br />
