COUNTY OF HAWAII
STATE OF HAWAII
BILL NO. 324
ORDINANCE NO. UG 127
A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE PARKS AND RECREATIONAL
FACILITY SCHEDULE, CHAPTER 15, ARTICLE 8, SECTION 15 -68.1, HAWAII
COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 EDITION, AS AMENDED), REGARDING RENAMING
THE PANA`EWA RAINFOREST ZOO TO "PANA`EWA RAINFOREST ZOO AND
GARDENS"
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Purpose. There are many plants throughout the zoo that have been
donated and/or maintained by various organizations, such as the Bamboo Society, the Palm
Society, the Tropical Rhododendron ( Vireya) Society, the Water Garden Society, the Orchid
Society, and the Senior Employment Program.
The main focal points include a water garden with the prized Victoria water lilies at the
zoo entrance, a lovely garden and hillside of vireya species near the zoo entrance, a very rare
Amorphophallus plant on display in its own cage, and a variety of beautiful plants, trees, palms,
and shrubs planted along the walkways and throughout the entire zoo.
The zoo grounds are considered a botanical garden. People not only go to the zoo to see
the animals, birds, reptiles, etc., they also go to have picnics, parties or just a leisurely stroll,
because of the beautiful surroundings and peaceful atmosphere.
The zoo's guest book shows that many visitors, both tourists and local residents alike, are
impressed and delighted with the gardens and the beautiful landscaping, thanks to the countless
donations from various organizations and the hard work of the many volunteers. In addition,
Friends of the Pana`ewa Zoo, a nonprofit organization, is in full support of changing the name
from Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo to "Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens"
The purpose of this ordinance is to rename the zoo in recognition of the efforts of the
community and to better reflect the composition of the zoo.
Therefore, the Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo is renamed pursuant to chapter 15, article 8,
section 15 -67, Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), which establishes
requirements for the naming of County parks and recreational facilities.
