COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />ORDINANCE NO <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />BILL NO. <br />66 95 <br />269 <br />AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ARTICLE VII, CHAPTER 4, OF THE HAWAI'I COUNTY <br />CHARTER (2000), RELATING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. <br />BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: <br />SECTION 1. Purpose. The purpose of this amendment is to change the title of the <br />County's fire department from "Fire Department" to "Hawai`i Fire Department." The <br />department has been known by a number of names since its formation in the late 1880's. In <br />1892 the island's fire fighting unit was officially titled the "Hilo Volunteer Fire Department." <br />Since those early days, the department and its official title have continued to evolve. This <br />proposal would adopt the name, "Hawai`i Fire Department" as the official title of the <br />department. <br />SECTION 2. The title of Article VII, chapter 4, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), <br />relating to the Fire Department, is renamed as follows: <br />"CHAPTER 4 <br />HAWAII FIRE DEPARTMENT" <br />SECTION 3. Article VII, chapter 4, section 7 -4.1, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), <br />is amended to read as follows: <br />"Section 7 -4.1. Organization. There shall be a Hawaii fire department <br />consisting of a fire chief, a deputy fire chief, a fire commission and the <br />necessary staff. The fire chief shall be the administrative head of the Hawaii <br />fire department." <br />SECTION 4. Article VII, chapter 4, section 7 -4.2, of the Hawaii County Charter (2000), <br />is amended to read as follows: <br />"Section 7 -4.2. Statement of Policy. It is hereby declared to be the <br />purpose of this chapter to establish in the county a system of fire <br />protection and prevention and emergency services which shall be based on <br />qualified and professional leadership and personnel. In order to achieve <br />this purpose, the Hawaii fire department shall be operated in accordance with <br />the following: <br />
