1.8. HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT. <br />PART ONE: INTRODUCTION. This section provides important background information <br />that is designed to situate the design patterns within the context of Downtown Hilo. <br />Throughout the Guidebook, words indicated in bold the first time they appear are <br />included in the Definitions list. <br />PART TWO: COMMUNITY DESIGN PATTERNS. In this section, design patterns are <br />grouped under five design themes: <br />1. Design Patterns for Building Sites <br />2. Design Patterns for Buildings <br />3. Design Patterns for the Streetscape <br />4. Design Patterns for Public Spaces <br />5. Design Patterns for Special Areas <br />Each design pattern includes: <br />1111,� A description of the design pattern and relevant information to describe its <br />background or purpose; <br />01- A list of recommendations that articulate the 'best practices' that are associated <br />with each pattern. In some cases, practices to avoid are also included; <br />01- Photographs or sketches to provide a visual representation of the design pattern. <br />• Supplemental Information: <br />Focus Areas create a cohesive link between the EDH 2025 Plan and the Community <br />Design Patterns. Each design theme implements one or more of the six (6) EDH 2025 <br />Focus Areas, and is referenced with the appropriate icons. The 6 Focus Areas are: 1) <br />Creating Economic Vitality, 2) Preserving Our Environment, 3) Strengthening and <br />Sustaining Our Community, 4) Enhancing Education, Culture, and the Arts, 5) Promoting <br />Health and Safety, and 6) Managing Growth. (Refer to the Appendix for the Focus Area <br />Vision Statements.) <br />In addition, EDH 2025 Sustainability Measures represent goals to achieve and provide a <br />way to assess sustainability- oriented development. Each design pattern references one <br />or more of the ten (10) Sustainability Measures: 1) Community Resiliency, 2) Civic <br />Gathering, 3) Earth Friendly, 4) Equitable Access, 5) Healthy Living & Walkability, 6) <br />Mixed Use Development, 7) Multi -modal Transportation, 8) 'Ohana Tradition, 9) Parks & <br />Natural Spaces, 10) Rhythm of Hilo.
