Mauna Lani Resort Association
68 -150 Ho'ohana Street * Kohala Coast, HI 96743
Telephone: (808) 885 -9888 Facsimile- (808) 885-1790
November 21, 2011
(Via Email & U.S. Mail)
2011 Hawai' i Redistricting Commission
West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A
74 -5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway
Kailua- -Kona, HI 96740
Attention: Ms. Karen Eoff, Secretary
Re; Comments Regarding Commission's Draft Plan of 11 -10 -2011
Proposed Designation of District S 1 District 9 Boundary
(Ref; Commission's Draft Map, "western Town/Waikoloa Beach Details ")
Dear Commissioners,
Mauna Lani Resort Association ( "MLRA ") is the master association of property owners at
Mauna Lani Resort, whose membership includes the owners of approximately 1,200 residential
units, 2 hotels, a commercial retail center, golf courses, and various other commercial entities.
In reviewing the Commission's Draft Redistricting Plan of November 10, 2011, we note that all
but three of Mauna Lani's 18 residential subdivisions are proposed to be located within District
9, with the remaining three neighborhoods which total only 194 members of our residential
community, located within District 8.
In this regard, a minor adjustment of this boundary to align it with Mauna Lani Resort's southern
property boundary would keep these 194 residents in the same voting district as the vast majority
of other residents within our master - planned community. We believe that our community will be
served most effectively and efficiently by keeping our residents within a single voting district;
rather than splitting them approximately 15% and 85° o between two separate districts. (For your
reference, attached is a map showing the Commission's proposed boundary, the three Mauna
Lani neighborhoods totaling 194 residents, and our suggested boundary adjustment.)
MLRA respectfully requests the Commission's kind consideration and support of this matter.
Should you have any questions or require any further information whatsoever, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Attachment
Respectfully submitted,
MAUNA LANI ES OCIA "'
Sandra A.
