MAUNA LA11TI RESORT
Mauna Lani Resort (Operation), Inc.
November 21, 2011
2011 Hawaii Redistricting Commission
County of Hawaii
74 -5044 Ane Keohokalole Hwy.
Kailua -Kona, Hawaii 95740
Attn: Karen Eoff, Commission Secretary
RE: LOCATION OF THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN DISTRICTS 8 and 9
Aloha Commissioners:
Mauna Lani Resort on the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii encompasses 3200 acres
and includes but is not limited to two hotels, two 18 -hole golf courses, a commercial
center, sports & fitness club, spa, visitor arrival center, numerous restaurants, single -
family residences, condominiums, etc. Mauna Lani has been marketing and promoting
the Resort as being located on the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii since the late
`70s. The planned redistricting places a portion of the resort in the North Kona district.
The most recent Redistricting Plan uses Mauna Lani Drive as a boundary. This, in
essence, bifurcates the Resort and its entities and Mauna Lani Resort asks the
Commission to consider the re- location of the boundary between Districts 8 and 9.
The Resort's request is that the boundary be shifted to its south property boundary with
Waikoloa Beach Resort (See attached Mauna Lani Resort map). This would keep Mauna
Lani Resort and its entities within one Council district -- District 9 -- which it would
prefer. Mauna Lani Resort's entities and residents are more closely aligned with the
communities of Kohala- Waimea - Waikoloa Village, than with North Kona.
Mahalo for your consideration of this request.
MAUNA ANI RESORT (OPERATION), INC.
Akito Toba
President
Attachment T MLR map
COMM. 51.45
68 -1400 Mauna Lani Drive, Suite 102 • Kohala Coast, Hawaii 96743 -9726
Telephone: (808) 881 -7900 a Facsimile: (808) 881 -7920
