Nutrition Program Highlights <br /> <br />Joan Kawakone, Program Director, (808) 961-8726 <br />Carla Carpenter Kabalis, Community Service Program Assistant II, (808) 961-8726 <br /> <br />Ms. Bernadette Johansen is congratulated by Mayor William “Billy” Kenoi and Parks and <br />Recreation Director Robert Fitzgerald. <br /> <br />Outstanding Bernie! <br /> <br />Ms. Bernadette “Bernie” Johansen was nominated for Hawai‘i County’s 2011 <br />Employee of the Year. She has been with the Nutrition Program since 1991 – that’s <br />over 20 years of providing outstanding service to the seniors of Honoka‘a! <br /> <br />Although Bernie’s regular job involves transporting seniors to/from the Honoka‘a <br />nutrition site, she regularly goes over and beyond to create magic. <br /> <br />A few years back, she worked with her husband, Waltham, to build a Christmas sleigh <br />for the seniors to ride in during the holidays. What a great time everyone had, riding through <br />Honoka‘a town! <br /> <br />Congratulations, and MAHALO to Bernie on being nominated for this special award. <br /> <br />HAVING FUN IN HĀMĀKUA <br /> <br />As we start a new year, we remember people and events that touched us in the past, and look <br />forward to living life to the fullest in the future. <br /> <br />This fall, seniors from the Honoka‘a, Pa‘auilo, and Pāpa‘aloa Nutrition Sites came together to <br />enjoy a beautiful sunny day at Laupahoehoe Point (see photos on page 14). Mahalo to <br />musicians Jerry, Tim and Rose! <br /> <br />Chaired by CSWs Jessie Rodrigues (Pa‘auilo) and Jeffrey Gaeth (Pāpa‘aloa), the costume <br />contest winners were Clara Cruz of Pa‘auilo (Grand Prize for Hunchback Flasher), Julia <br />Kaneshige of Pa‘auilo (1st for Singing Witch), Yaeko Fujino of Pa‘auilo (2nd for Aloha Mummy), <br />Ray Saito of Honoka‘a (3rd for Crazy Ray the Pirate). <br /> <br />The cupcake winners were Lourdes Agtang, (Grand Prize for Pumpkin Patch), Ray Saito <br />(1st-webs), Clara Cruz (1st-roach fantasy), Beatrice Cabral (1st- spooks). <br /> <br />Winners in 2nd place were Sadako Kato, Yoshiko Kidani, and Elizabeth Eugenio. <br />Winners in 3rd place were Yoshino Nagasako, Norma Cornelio, and Reme Orallo. <br /> <br />In Memoriam <br />Ms. Sylvia Leong, our Honoka‘a Community Service Worker III, passed away in November. <br />Sylvia was with the Nutrition Program from May, 2004.
