COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />PUBLIC ACCESS, OPEN SPACE AND <br />NATURAL RESOURCES PRESERVATION COMMISSION (PONC) <br />SUMMARY OF 2011 ACQUISITIONS <br />Kawa, Ka`n District <br />On November 8th 2011, the County of Hawaii <br />completed its fifth purchase utilizing funds from the <br />Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources <br />Preservation Fund. The purchase price was <br />$3,900,000.00 and consisted of three parcels (Tax <br />Map Keys: (3) 9 -5 -16:06 & 25 and 9 -5- 17:05) totaling <br />550.871 acres. <br />These properties are used by the public for picnicking, swimming, subsistence fishing and <br />shoreline gathering. It contains a 2 -acre intertidal brackish water pond, Ka`ili`ili Beach, a <br />well documented nesting area for the endangered Hawaiian Hawksbill Turtle, off -shore <br />foraging areas for the threatened Green Sea Turtle and habitat for migratory and endemic <br />shorebirds. There are also numerous historic and cultural sites including the Ke`eku Heiau <br />(luakini) and portions of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. <br />The purchase was partially funded by a <br />$1,500,000.00 grant from the State, Department of <br />Land and Natural Resources, Legacy Land <br />Conservation Program in addition to a $507,000.00 <br />grant from the Federal, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, <br />Recovery Land Acquisition Program. <br />With this acquisition, the County now owns 785.164 <br />acres of coastal land in this area and has acquired a <br />total of $3,221,750.00 in grant monies by leveraging funds with State and Federal sources. <br />The County would also like to acknowledge the Trust for Public Lands for their continued <br />assistance and support for this and numerous projects state -wide. We will now be working <br />with members of the public, community groups and various government agencies to address <br />the long term stewardship and management making sure that these lands are preserved for <br />generations to come. <br />,� F`f <br />
