discussions continue on the duplex homes at the Coast Guard site to support needed family <br />housing. Awaiting information from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Parker <br />Ranch. June 22, 4:30 p.m. Housing Subcommittee meeting at Kohala Senior Center. Self-Help <br />Kumakua Phase II will include twelve (12) three bedroom homes for applicant families. Housing <br />costs include (1) Land, (2) Infrastructure, (3) Materials, (4) Administration / Contractor, and (5) <br />Bottom line Profit. The search continues for land for community housing programs. Potentials <br />include major land owners such as the State of Hawaii. Contact with the New Moon Foundation <br />is planned, as well as inquiries into a Partnership / Housing program with the North Kohala <br />Community Resource Center, due to their 501c status, in support of housing projects. Hermann <br />questioned the demand right now for Kumakua's second and future phases, since the market <br />changed dramatically in the last 3 or 4 years from when the project was first proposed. How <br />many families can actually afford the homes? Joe asked how Habitat for Humanity works. <br />Land must be provided upfront, and then Habitat will build from the ground up. Hermann asked <br />if Habitat does subdivisions. Habitat for Humanity doesn't get involved in subdivisions. <br /> <br />July 11, 8:30 a.m. at Hoea Ag Park Office. Richard Liebmann, Kathie Pomeroy, <br />Agriculture: <br />Andrea Dean, Marc Kinoshita, Deborah Winter discussed developing a strategic plan for 50% <br />goal for NK food. Andrea has secured a grant from Hawaii County Council, $15,000 for <br />developing a strategic plan and implementing a community harvest initiative. Strategic plan to <br />be developed in 12 months. Monthly meetings to focus on this goal. Accurately assess where <br />North Kohala is in terms of 50% goal. Commercial production, backyard gardening, hunting, <br />fishing, gathering, bartering. Determine what metrics to use to assess success. Identify current <br />food projects in the community, strategic plan to include projects to increase food production, <br />marketing, and distribution. <br />The next meeting in August will be a talk story with Bob Acree. <br /> <br />STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC: Jesse Wells asked for a land use report on the Harrison <br />subdivision application. Hermann suggested attendance at next week's Growth Management <br />meeting.
