around town was built to help preserve the old town and now the new town is moving
to the highway. What gives ?!?
P- Needs to look like people care. "Vintage' lighting for e.g., hanging planters, flowers,
good murals, perhaps for historic info...
P- nice old town, but bums make it scary
P- ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN IS PRESERVED BY A LACK OF ECONOMIC GROWTH
P- Pahoa could be gorgeous w /work.
P- Pahoa has lots of cool stuff -good to officially preserve plantation architecture, old
stone walls
P- Pahoa needs to preserve its cultural identify. Most important is some sort of
architectural design review committee. The new Long's should be better landscaped.
You should be able to cross the street safely in Pahoa, The volcano sign on the Cash and
Carry needs to be preserved at all costs.
P- places are being destroyed instead of restored
P- Please see above -- important to maintain buildings that can be maintained or
repaired, and address with deconstruction rather than demolition those that are beyond
repair. This work is a benefit to the whole community, and for the costs and labor to be
shared somehow would be valuable. Needs some out -of -the -box thinking, eg, by
applying training funding and labor of trainees or community service or ...?
P- Preserve "old west" flavor with facelift of entire Pahoa town, all buildings REQUIRED
TO COMPLY. Deal with slumlord owners. Creation of Performing Arts Center.
P- Preserve Old Pahoa!
P- Sal Luquinn has done wonderful work with the Akibono but everything else is nothing
P- save ALL the older buildings I say. Let's clean 'em up and slap on a coat of fresh paint
P- Some of the nice character of old town Pahoa should be preserved
P- Some of the old buildings remaining in Pahoa are charming, but are a nightmare for
people with disabilities to access -- government road is so narrow it does not allow for
adequate pedestrian access, does not allow for any landscaping, parking along it is
inadequate. Buildings need to be moved further back or parking moved off the street to
allow for real side walks, bike paths, ADA accessibility, and still retain the historic
charming old buildings.
P- The historic preservation is acknowledged which feels good, but could use better
upkeep and clean.
P- There needs to be more effort to preserve what is here and not develop the shoreline
and Pahoa Town to keep a sense of history and place as intact as possible.
P- This should be an important part of the plan.
P- Try keep old style architecture! Too many metal buildings
P- Unfortunately the only historic preservation we have had in pahoa is the belief the
rest of the island has of us and that is pahoa is pretty much a crime and trash infected
population that has never been worth spending money on. This attitude has got to
change and it must change with the community itself.
P- Want historic preservation for Pahoa
Cultural and Historic Preservation
Page 3
