What we do have in Pahoa is pretty good. Kaleo's is great. Luquins is good. Malama Market is
very convenient and has most things. Longs has been a good addition to the community also.
Like I said previously there is not enough support for economic development in the community.
There are people that want to work and cannot. There are services that people have to drive all
the way to Hilo or Keaau to get. The county and the state make it difficult to start a business.
Land is too expensive and taxes are high. Building expenses are prohibitive. There needs to be
some incentives for economic growth. Like tax rebates or economic assistance to those that
want to start a business. There is a large population of people in the Pahoa area and to lose out
on the revenue in the community is a great waste.
Getting better all of the time
need more options for evening entertainment, hangouts for all ages do not need more box
stores
Much improvement in the past 10 years but only a drop in the bucket of needs
its fine just the way it is
I love how it is now. Everything I need in a friendly neighborhood environment. Occasional trips
into Hilo for special items would be unavoidable no matter how build up the commerce in
Puna.
Don't make it a goal
Marked improvement over the past 10 years
I think we have a lot of nice shopping, restaurants, gas stations, etc.
Amazing variety of good eateries for a small town. Shops are improving, although the walkways
between them are quite dangerous. A definite liability for the town. THe town could keep it's
'wildwest' / frontier look and still look clean and cared for. Plantings/ planters in this growers
paradise would help, and there would surely be many volunteers for this type of project.
NOt a lot of diversity or options but it works.
Wish there were more organic natural food options
Most things we need are in Pahoa. Only need to go to Hilo once every few weeks.
Development Page 9
