31 Years of Music Hula and Memories <br />388 participants from 19 halaus, including 5 from Japan, 1 from Okinawa, 1 from <br />California, 2 from Maui, 1 Moloka‘i Halau and 9 groups from the Big Island, <br />gathered to celebrate this years theme “Noho Ali‘i Ka Lani” The Heavens Reign <br />Above. The Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa hosted both the competition and craft <br />fair on September 11th and 12th. Over 1,200 people attended the two day festival <br />to watch the 19 halau compete for top prizes in 6 categories. The individual Tutu <br />Wahine and Tutu Kane dances took place on Wednesday night, followed by the <br />group competitions in the Mixed, Wahine, Kane and Overall categories on <br />Thursday night. The top three winners in each of the competitions received prizes <br />generously donated by local sponsors: First Hawaiian Bank, Big Island Candies, <br />Kukio Resorts, LLC., Akamai Photo, Hawai‘i Island Festivals, Kona Aerial <br />Gymnastics, Halau Kala‘akeakauikawekiu, County of Hawai‘i Parks and <br />Recreation Elderly Activities Division, and the Kupuna Hula Festival. This year’s <br />individual winners included; third place in the Kane category Harry Cabrera Na <br />Kupuna O Kohala, second place; Alyka Nakoa-Clark dancing with Ka Pa Hula O <br />Maui, and first place individual Kane winner from Na Kupuna O Moana in <br />Molokai; Richard Markham. The individual Wahine winners were; third place <br />Kika Nixon performing for Waimea’s Halau Manu Le‘a Hawai‘i, second place; <br />Big Island’s Joseanne Wong from Hula Halau Na Pua U‘i O Hawai‘i. First place <br />individual Wahine dancer from Maui was Ka Pa Hula O Maui’s Estra <br />Luna-Schwartz. Thursday night’s Kane group winners were; third place Ka Pa <br />Hula O Maui, second place; Na Kupuna O Kohala, and first place Kane group <br />winners from Moloka‘i were Na Kupuna O Moana. Third place in the group <br />Wahine division was, Na Kupuna O Kaunoa from Maui. Second place awards <br />went to Kailua Kona’s Halau Hula Na Pua U‘i O Hawai‘i, and first place winners <br />from Keaukaha, Na Kupuna O Kawananakoa. The three winning halaus in the <br />mixed group competition were; third place Hula Halau O Kawaimaluhia, second <br />place; Na Kupuna O Kohala, and the overall mixed group winner, Na Kupuna O <br />Moana. The title of overall group winner went to Moloka‘i group, Na Kupuna O <br />Moana. The 32nd Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival is tentatively scheduled <br />for September 10-11, 2014 at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa. <br /> <br />Hula Halau Na Pua U‘i O Hawai‘i <br /> <br />Na Kupuna O Kona Ali‘i from Kailua-Kona <br /> <br />Na Kupuna O Kohala <br /> <br />3rd place soloist winner Kika Nixon from Halau Manu Le‘a Hawai‘i from Kamuela. <br /> <br />Halloween Spooktacular Ground Golf <br />The 2013 Halloween Spooktacular Ground Golf event took place on October 25, 2013 <br />at the Old Airport in Kailua-Kona. Sharon Taylor from the Kona Mauka Rotary Club <br />awarded the winners with their prizes and the Rotary club generously sponsored the <br />event by providing the prizes and morning refreshments. 77 seniors from as far as <br />Pa‘auilo and Pāhala participated this year. <br /> <br />Women’s Longest Putt Winner Darlene Walencewicz from Waikoloa <br /> <br />Men’s Longest Putt Winner Louis Troche from Kohala <br /> <br />1st Place team were the Zombies <br />from Kohala (Tito Pasco, Alfonso <br />Mitchell, Max Guitang, Mino <br />Nakasato & George Rivera.) <br /> <br />Our Hole in One winners were as pictured: Agnes Kaholo, <br />David Byers, Andy Tayamen and Kikue Masumoto. <br /> <br />Costume Contest: Left to Right: <br />Bobby & Lorrain Glory from Kohala <br />took 2nd place, Elaine Coats from <br />Kailua-Kona won 1st Place, Dee <br />McWilliams from Kailua Kona and <br />Irene Angot from Pa‘auilo tied for 3rd. <br /> <br />Kupuna News 8 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777
