<br />Carol Kitaoka reported that the Department of Education is working on voter <br />education; educating the students on voting and understanding the issues and <br />registering them to vote. The Bar Association and the Department of Education <br />are partnering on this issue. Katie Nova suggested that the Committee contact <br />the Bar Association for more information. <br /> <br />5. Essay Contest <br />thth <br />Carol Kitaoka reported that there were 57 entries from the 5 & 6 graders, 14 <br />thththth <br />entries from the 7 & 8 graders, 6 entries from the 9 & 10 graders and 28 <br />thth <br />entries from the 11 & 12 graders. There are more winners than prizes so she <br />requested to increase the essay budget by $200. Carol Kitaoka moved to <br />increase the budget to $3,3100 from $3,210 to accommodate the extra prizes. <br />The goal for this contest is to encourage and empower kids and teachers. <br />Farrah-Marie Gomes seconded the motion. The motion was passed. <br />The essay contest is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, 2013. <br />Elena Cabatu will be the MC; Kim Schneider will give the President’s message; <br />Katie Nova will give the thank you to the teachers and Carol Kitaoka will give the <br />thank you at the end of the program. <br /> <br />B. Health <br />1. Women’s Health Month <br />No report. <br /> <br />2. Ads <br />Elena Cabatu reported on Teen Prevention and Pregnancy Prevention ads. She <br />will be meeting with the State Commission and will suggest pulling resources <br />together through radio ads thru the DOE. Wants to see ads go statewide; will <br />ask the counties to buy spots. Interns at UH Manoa can help with scripting. <br />Nancy Kelly reported that Hawaii Teen Outreach Program is a positive youth <br />program. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney may have some money and we <br />could partner with them. <br /> <br />C. Liaison <br /> 1. Legislative Update <br />Cathy Betts, Executive Director of the Commission on the Status of Women <br />distributed copies of the Bills which the Commission is following and reported on <br />the following bills: <br /> <br />a. SB526 SD1 Hospital emergency Compassionate Care; Emergency <br />Contraception. This bill requires that the hospital must offer emergency <br />contraception to sex assault victims. <br />Kim Schneider suggested that the Committee be informed on when <br />hearings are scheduled so we can write testimonies. Kim Schneider will <br />put together a testimony in support of this bill and we can vote on it at the <br />next meeting. <br /> <br /> b.
