Overall, from the police prospective, it went well for spending a very long time post disaster. They stayed out there until the end. CID is still patrolling 24/7, and the National Guard is pulling out today. They started out working 12-hour shifts.The police stations were opened up for officers who couldn’t easily get home, to rest and take showers. The command vehicle was sent out, and they were able to use its restroom and for recouping before going back out again. They pretty much adapted to the situation. He is very proud of their personnel. No police facilities were damaged, but there was some damage to vehicles. Chair Bertsch said he was impressed by how the police handled the situation. Prior to the storm, Assistant Chief Kealoha explained their plans to him. He thanked the Chief and the department for planning, implementation, and keeping everyone safe. EXECUTIVE SESSION Commissioner Victorine motioned to meet in executive session to consult with Corporation Counsel on questions and issues pertaining to the commission's powers, duties, privileges, immunities, and liabilities; to consider discipline and charges against officers or employees of the Hawai‘i Police Department; and to consider sensitive matters relating to public safety pursuant to HRS 92-5 (a) (2) (4) (6) and the Hawai‘i County Charter Section 13-20 (b). Vice Chair Schutte seconded, and it carried unanimously. Executive session convened at 9:55 a.m. Regular session reconvened at 10:30 a.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS Chair Bertsch announced that the Police Commission’s next monthly meeting will be on Friday, September 19, 2014, at 9:00 a.m., in the Aupuni Center Conference Rm., 101 Pauahi St., Hilo, Hawai‘i.
