Van Bergen <br />Deputy Director <br />`Ahalanui Park Closed to Repair Storm - <br />Damaged Warm Pond <br />The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation has closed `Ahalanui Park in <br />lower Puna so cleanup and repairs may be made to the park's popular swimming pond. <br />High surf from Tropical Storm Iselle damaged the rock walls and concrete walkways <br />forming the pond's perimeter and deposited debris and boulders into the swimming <br />area, prompting Hawaii County to close the pond as a safety precaution. <br />General contractor William C. Loeffler Construction Inc. started cleanup and repair work <br />Monday, October 6, and expects to finish the project, weather and conditions permitting, <br />by November 10. The entire park, including the pond, picnic pavilions and parking area, <br />is now closed to protect park patrons and accommodate heavy equipment needed for <br />the repair work. <br />A follow-up announcement will be issued once the exact reopening date becomes <br />known. <br />The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks `Ahalanui Park patrons and the <br />general public for their continued patience and understanding while the repairs are <br />being made. <br />For more information, please contact Jason Armstrong, Public Information Officer, at <br />961-8311 or iarmstronq(a�hawaiicounty.gov. <br />-30- <br />County of Hawai'i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer. <br />
