Van Bergen <br />Deputy Director <br />Pana`ewa Zoo Closing December 18 <br />for Little Fire Ant Treatments <br />The Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens will be closed temporarily on <br />Thursday, December 18, so the facility can be treated for little fire ants. <br />Normal operating hours will resume starting Friday, December 19, when <br />the zoo will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. <br />The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks zoo patrons and the <br />general public for their patience and understanding while it performs <br />treatments aimed at controlling this invasive species in the public's parks. <br />Located off of Stainback Highway about five miles south of Hilo, the 12 - <br />acre Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens is the only natural tropical <br />rainforest zoo in the United States. More than 80 animal species and 100 <br />palm varieties can be found at the zoo.
