ADA Coordinator's Report
June 17, 2015
I was involved in referring a consumer with a mobility disability to Alisa Mitchener in our
Parks and Recreation Department. The woman was having difficulty accessing
Richardson's Ocean Beach Park and asked us to allow her to be dropped off at a
location closer to a walkable path. We assessed the best way to do this and Clayton
Honma granted her request.
We purchased therapeutic stairs for the Pahala Pool which also has a lift.
Last week a man called the Planning Department. He was in the parking lot at the
Aupuni Center and needed to get to our Vehicle Registration Office, but said he
couldn't walk. We wound up meeting him in the parking lot and rolling him into the
office in an office chair. After that, I purchased a transport chair so we are better
equipped to deal with requests like this in the future.
Here's an update from Mass Transit:
Hele-On bus service to the airport is going well.
The Mass Transit Agency is working on paratransit service in Hilo and Kona. Service is
anticipated to start in the next calendar year.
On June 8, the Department of Justice issued the ADA Update: A Primer for State and
Local Government.
