Van Bergen Deputy Director Hilo's Kawananakoa Gymnasium Playground Reopened Following Repairs to Safety Surface The Department of Parks and Recreation and Mayor Billy Kenoi are happy to announce that the children's playground at Kawananakoa Gymnasium in Hilo was reopened today, Thursday, November 12. The playground had been closed since October 19 so a new synthetic turf safety surface could be installed. Featuring enhanced fall -protection properties and the appearance of natural grass, the new surface will offer greater wear resistance than the original rubberized safety surface that couldn't withstand the playground's heavy use. The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks park users and members of the public for remaining patient while the playground was closed for this upgrade. Located at 156 Baker Avenue as part of Hualani Park in Hilo's Keaukaha area, Kawananakoa Gymnasium is open Mondays through Saturdays. Repairing the playground is the latest in a growing list of island -wide playground improvements that Mayor Kenoi and the Department of Parks and Recreation have delivered to benefit keiki.
