Van Bergen <br />Deputy Director <br />Hilo's Kawananakoa Gymnasium Playground <br />Reopened Following Repairs to Safety Surface <br />The Department of Parks and Recreation and Mayor Billy Kenoi are happy to announce that the <br />children's playground at Kawananakoa Gymnasium in Hilo was reopened today, Thursday, <br />November 12. <br />The playground had been closed since October 19 so a new synthetic turf safety surface could <br />be installed. Featuring enhanced fall -protection properties and the appearance of natural grass, <br />the new surface will offer greater wear resistance than the original rubberized safety surface <br />that couldn't withstand the playground's heavy use. <br />The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks park users and members of the public for <br />remaining patient while the playground was closed for this upgrade. <br />Located at 156 Baker Avenue as part of Hualani Park in Hilo's Keaukaha area, Kawananakoa <br />Gymnasium is open Mondays through Saturdays.
