Lee, P. E., Director
Department of Public Works
County of Hawaii
Dear Mr. Lee:
SUBJECT: Kailua Village Design Commission Meeting of May 6, 2014
Applicant: Ina Custom Signs
Land Owner: Kona Hospitality LLC
Design Review of a sign variance for two wall signs and a ground sign
Tax Map Key: 7-5-007:009 (COR-14-091207) _
This letter is to inform you that the Kailua Village Design Commission, at its May 6, 2014
meeting, voted to recommend to the Public Works Director that the three signs proposed in the
subject variance application be revised as to their size or placement as set forth below prior to
your referral of this application to the County Council for its consideration:
I. The proposed mauka wall sign (facing Kuakini Highway) should be reduced in size to a
maximum of sixteen (16) square feet and be comprised of only the Holiday Inn Express logo,
that being the white "H" on the green square background as shown in the application. This
would result in a sign area of approximately one-half of that proposed for this sign.
2. Placement of the proposed wall sign facing Sarona Road should be relocated to a lower
elevation, directly below the proposed location, to be at the middle of the second floor
elevation, in order to ensure long-teen visibility under mature tree canopies and minimize
unnecessary light projection beyond the necessary street exposures,
3. The size, shape and materials of the proposed ground sign should be revised as follows:
a. The size of the ground sign should be reduced to comprise a maximum sign area of
eighteen (18) square feet if the revised sign includes both logo and lettering, or a
maximum of sixteen (16) square feet if it includes only a logo and background color as
described in Recommendation No. 1 above. The Commission encouraged the applicant
to consider repeating the same sign, in size, form and content, as recommended above for
the mauka building wall (Recommendation No. 1).
b. Rather than being mounted on a pedestal, the sign, whether single or double-sided, should
be framed within a surrounding lava rock structure consistent with the appearance of lava
rock walls in Kailua Village
Hawaii Courihv is an F.yuctl Oppew mtit,Pmvider mid E111phOyer
EXHIBIT 1
