Disaster Supplies Kit
After a disaster, relief workers will be on the scene, but they cannot reach everyone immediately.
You could get help in hours, or it may take days. Basic services, such as electricity, gas, water, and
telephones, may be cut off, or you may have to evacuate at a moment's notice. You probably won't have
time to search for the supplies you'll need. Your family will cope best by preparing for a disaster before
it strikes. There are basics you should stock in your home, office and vehicle: water, food, first aid,
emergency supplies and special items. Your home and vehicle kits should also include extra clothing,
bedding and tools. Keep your home and vehicle supplies in easy-to-carry containers, backpacks or duffel
bags. Your office kit should be kept under your desk.
Kits should contain a minimum three day supply of the following:
• Water
o Store one gallon of water per person per day.
o Have household bleach available as a purifying agent.
• Food
o Store at least a three day supply of nonperishable food for each person. Select foods
that require no refrigeration, cooking or preparation. Select food items that are
compact and lightweight and rotate the food supply every six months.
• Prescription and Non-Prescription Medications
o Keep a seven day supply of vital medications on hand at all times.
• First Aid Kit
o Bandages, scissors, latex gloves, sterile pads, sterile roller bandages, tweezers,
petroleum jelly or other lubricant, cleansing agents, antiseptic ointment or spray, ACE
bandages and first aid booklet.
• Sanitation
o Toilet paper, feminine supplies, plastic garbage bags and ties, soap, and personal
hygiene items.
• Tools and Supplies
o Paper plates, plastic utensils, small amount of cash, fire extinguisher, pliers, compass,
aluminum foil, flares, shut-off wrench for utilities, flashlight and extra batteries,
nonelectric can opener, matches, pencil and paper, whistle, dust mask and work gloves,
mops of the area, extra set of car keys, cash and personal identification.
• Battery-Operated Radio
o Extra batteries.
o NOAA Weather Radio (optional, but very important) which broadcasts National Weather
Service reports.
• Clothing and Bedding
o Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear.
• Important Family Items
o Keep these important documents in a waterproof container in your home, and keep
copies in your home kit: wills, insurance policies, deeds, stock certificates, bonds, bank
account numbers, passports, social security cords, immunization records, credit card
numbers, birth, marriage and death certificates.
