Recovery, Resilience and ReCreation

Self Discovery Through Art, a new non-profit organization based in Hilo celebrates May
as National Mental Health Awareness month on the Big Island with the opening of their
show Recovery, Resilience and ReCreation at the Wailoa Center. The show, which
opened on May 5, is an educational art exhibition celebrating Community Wellness
through resilience.

Self Discovery Through Art showcases the fact that people across all ages and stages of
life can be educated about Resilience using the universal language of visual art. In the
show, Resilience is imaged as the Bridge from Recovery from loss to ReCreation of a life
worth living, as we overcome life's challenges and adversities.

Mayor Kim has proclaimed May as National Mental Health month in the County of
Hawaii.

The show used 2 quotations as book ends: "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,
its about learning to dance in the rain." by Vivian Greene and the famous quote by Maya
Angelou, "My mission in life is not merely to survive but to thrive and to do so with
some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style." to set the educational
intention that resilience is a learned trait and can be built in over time with determination
and effort.

In the Fountain Gallery, the Four Dimensions of Recovery: Home, Health, Purpose and
Community were illustrated in 2D and 3D images. Upstairs viewers were invited to
navigate the River of Life with its white water, eddies and waterfalls, taking time to
pause at the bank of each bay or outer recessed areas of the gallery to learn about the 10
factors of Resilience which include having an optimistic attitude, gathering social
supports and role models, facing fears among others till one is able to create mission and
meaning in life after tragedy.

The displayed works are a form of visual thinking where thoughts, feelings, senses and
imagination are welcome to come out to play. The creators of this form of learning
believe that this integrated learning method cannot be underestimated in its power to
anchor new information within familiar themes all in the service of our wellness.

The community agencies that participated in the Resilience project were Circle of Life
(pre-school), Boys and Girls Club of Hilo, Hospice of Hilo Volunteers, Care Hawaii inc,
Kamana Senior Center and Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home.

Self Discovery Through Art also collaborated with local professional artists such as Ken
Charon, Ira Ono and Ingrid Fregeau, who created the images for ReCreation or the
possibility of a full blossoming of life as we overcome life's challenges.

The show will run through May 25. Check with Wailoa Center for hours of operation.
