ailapa
NA KILO AINA
(Observers of our Sustenance)
Kawaihae Camp — October 9-13, 2017
The camp will be held during the fall intercession hoping to target future leaders as well as provide a
high-quality, valuable program for our families during the weeklong break. The camp is meant for
whole families (multi generation) to participate in but we do recognize the hardship of our working
parents taking a week off to participate in the entire program. We are offering families who would like
to participate an option for young adults 10+ to participate in the entire program while parents are
working and ask that parents participate on the non -work days/hours. (Children under 10 can join all
the activities but will need adult supervision. We hope grandparents can take part and work in
partnership with younger family members)
Accomplishments & Achievements
At the end of our camp, we hope to:
• Provision our community with skills to better understand our environment so we are better
prepared to adapt to the natural cycles of place. Broadening awareness and consciousness of our
environment, our activities, and how they impact each other and contributing to a seasonal
calendar for Kawaihae. (Huli `Ia)
• Share and learn about wahi paha or storied places and explore a section of the shoreline trails
learning about the many places within Kawaihae, their histories, adding to the development of a
deeper relationship to place.
• Provision participants with information through expanding their knowledge base on fish species,
function, habitat, identification, reproduction and use. This will be accomplished through
teaching tools, such as ID posters, getting in the water and exploring the shallow reef system of
Kawaihae, removing some reef fish for dissection and consumption, and working with resources
who specialize in reproduction, fish behavior, harvesting, and management.
• Provide an opportunity for participants to develop a deeper relationship and appreciation of
Kawaihae and build upon their love for the ocean, for our `aina (sustenance), for our community,
and for our island.
Please fill out the attached registration form. There will be a registration & workshop fee of $20.
All meals and supplies will be covered by our event sponsors.
Each participant will also receive a program shirt. Please return this registration form and fee
(checks made out to Kailapa Community Association) to Diane Kanealii (61-4016 Kai'opae Place
Kamuela, HI 96743) by October 1, 2017.
Once we receive registration forms and fees we will confirm your participation through email or a phone call. As
we get closer to the camp we will notify each family contact person of any updates and/or changes that may affect
participants. If you have any questions, call Diane 640-3195 or Pelika at 960-8001.
*PLEASE KEEP THE FIRST 2 PAGES FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND RETURN THE LAST 2 PAGES
IN THE APPLICATION FORM TO THE ADDRESS PROVIDED ABOVE.
This camp is made possible through a grant by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and other communityfunders, with support
from Na Maka o Papahanaumokuakea, UH Sea Grant College Program, UH Hilo/PACRC, Na Kalai Wa'a, Ala Kahakai
National Park Service, Liquid Robotics, The Nature Conservancy, Department of Transportation, Puaka'ilima Surf Park,
and many other community partners.
