The U.S. Economic Development Administration funded Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for Hawai'i County identifies under the cluster of Business Development, Small Business and Entrepreneurship that necessary infrastructure should be in place and/or efforts should be made to secure such infrastructure to support the local economy and economic growth. The County believes that a retail post office is one such piece of infrastructure. To further guide public planning for the area, the residents of the Ka'u district engaged to identify key issues and priorities for their community by 2030. The draft Ka'u Community Development Plan, which is currently before the Hawai'i County Council for deliberation and formal action, identifies action steps that would include expanded commercial retail and services and public services within rural villages to further support the local economy. The community is likely to be most receptive to a full-service post office, which in turn is likely to attract other needed services to Ocean View and help the area grow, prosper and become more self-sufficient.
