The plan addresses strengthening local economic development in the following ways: <br />■ Preserves opportunities to live off the land <br />■ Guides the implementation of regional economic development strategies <br />■ Guides the development of a regional education, enterprise development, and research network <br />■ Guides regional strategies to increase "buying local" <br />■ Guides efforts to strengthen the local agriculture value chain <br />■ Allows for the diversification of agriculture -based businesses and rural uses on agricultural lands <br />■ Guides the development of local, renewable, distributed energy networks <br />■ Guides the development of a place -based approach to community tourism <br />These strategies are organized by subtopics in Section 3: Preferred Land Use & Settlement Patterns, Section 4: <br />Protect and Enhance Natural and Cultural Resources, Section 5: Strengthen Infrastructure. Facilities, and Services, <br />Section 6: Build a Sustainable, Local Economy, of the CDP below. <br />1...4 How was tri_ .:DP develop. <br />• The Hamakua CDP was developed through extensive community and stakeholder engagement. <br />Important documents developed through the CDP process are as follows: <br />• Hamakua Community Profile (2010) <br />This is a comprehensive, detailed profile developed based on community knowledge and expertise, <br />as well as existing data, reports, and studies. <br />• Values and Vision Statement (2011) <br />Community members identified core community values and a vision of what they'd like to see in <br />Hamakua in 2030, and this was synthesized from the more than 17,000 community comments <br />received into a Vision statement adopted by the Steering Committee. <br />• Hamakua Proposed Strategies for Consideration (2011) <br />Through a series of sub -regional workshops conducted in 2011, the Proposed Strategies for <br />Consideration booklet was developed and presented to the public to explore various strategies <br />under consideration and gather community feedback. <br />• Community Objectives (2013) <br />Using the values, vision, and profile, Community Objectives were developed and adopted by the <br />Steering Committee in 2013. These Community Objectives were used to guide the direction of <br />strategies to develop preliminary policies and recommended actions. <br />• Draft Analysis Documents (2014) <br />11 <br />
