Kīlauea Summit Ash Hazard
Halema'uma'u vent is sporadically generating volcanic ash as the vent walls collapse into the
receding lava lake. There is also the imminent possibility of the magma interacting with the
water table, potentially creating explosive activity and substantial volcanic ash. The areas
directly surrounding Kīlauea summit will be the most likely to be affected. For more
information, see this USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory presentation from May 9th at
the Kīlauea Visitor Center.
Useful resources:
 Volcanic ash impacts and mitigation: USGS webpages:
https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanic_ash/
 Preparing for ashfall: International Volcanic Health Hazard Network (IVHHN)
pamphlet: http://www.ivhhn.org/ash-pamphlets
 Health hazards of volcanic ash: IVHHN pamphlet: http://www.ivhhn.org/ash-
pamphlets
 Protection from breathing ash: IVHHN webpage: http://www.ivhhn.org/ash-
protection
 Protecting water catchments:
http://www.health.hawaii.gov/sdwb/files/2013/12/Residential_RainCatch_Info.pdf.
Also see https://vog.ivhhn.org/catchment-systems
