<br />CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: May 15, 2018 <br />MEDIA UPDATE Time: 2:30 PM <br /> Radio Frequency: Every 1 hour <br /> Update: #4 <br /> <br />Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption Update 4, 2:30pm – Highway 130 reopening <br />to local residents only <br /> <br />This is a Civil Defense Message for Tuesday, May 15 at 2:30 p.m. <br />The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced that Highway 130 is now open <br />beyond Malama Street for local residents only. The Hawaii Police Department is requesting no <br />large trailers or heavy equipment be taken over the metal plates. <br /> <br />The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports a steady eruption of ash coming from Halemaumau <br />Crater is causing ash to fall downwind across portions of Kau District. Ash is being reported <br />along Highway 11 to Pahala. <br /> Avoid excessive exposure to ash which is an eye and respiratory irritant. <br /> Those with breathing issues should take extra precaution to minimize exposure. <br /> Motorists are advised to drive with caution. <br /> All roads in this area are open at this time. <br />Hawaii Fire Department reports that air quality is still condition RED around fissures in the <br />southeast area of Lanipuna Gardens and surrounding farm lots on Pohoiki Road. Condition RED <br />means immediate danger to health so take action to limit further exposure. Severe conditions <br />may exist such as choking and inability to breathe. Sulfur Dioxide (SO) gas from fissures are <br />2 <br />especially dangerous for elderly, children/babies and people with respiratory problems. <br /> <br />County, State and Federal partners continue to monitor the situation.
