<br />CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: May 17, 2018 <br />MEDIA UPDATE Time: 7 AM <br /> Update: #1 <br /> <br />Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption <br /> <br />This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, May 17 at 7 a.m. <br /> <br />The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has advised of an explosive eruption at Kilauea summit that occurred <br />at 4:17 a.m. This eruption is generating an ash plume as high as 25,000 feet. The resulting ash plume may <br />affect the surrounding areas. The wind may carry the ash plume north towards Ka’u, Volcano, Mt. View, <br />Kea’au and as far as Hilo. National Weather Service has issued an ashfall advisory until 12 p.m. <br /> <br />Due to elevated sulfur dioxide (S0) levels, Pahoa High, Intermediate, and Elementary School Complex, <br />2 <br />Keonepoko Elementary, Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science, Volcano School of Arts and Science will be <br />closed. <br /> <br />County, State and Federal partners continue to monitor the situation.
