<br />CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: May 17, 2018 <br />MEDIA UPDATE Time: 4:30 PM <br /> Update: #5 <br /> <br />Incident: East Rift Zone Eruption <br /> <br />This is a Civil Defense Message for Thursday, May 17 at 4:30 pm. <br /> <br />The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has reported a new fissure 21 down rift of Makamae Street in <br />Leilani Estates. Several fissures have reactivated, and HVO reports lava is pahoehoe, and flows have been <br />generated. <br /> <br />Due to the continued volcanic activity the following policies are in effect: <br /> Residents in Leilani Subdivision need to be aware of this new activity and flows and take necessary <br />precautions. <br /> Be aware of possible additional hazards with utility lines and poles obstructing roadways and avoid <br />all downed wires. <br /> Do continue to be on the alert for volcanic fumes of SO2. <br /> <br />The residents of Puna are going through a very difficult time. We ask for your help and understanding. <br /> <br />Thank you for listening. We are on watch 24-hours a day for your safety. <br /> <br />This is your Hawai‘i County Civil Defense. <br />
