Page 5 <br />1 am from the east coast originally, but the United <br />2 States Marine Corps brought me here over 30 years ago. <br />3 And after Desert Storm, I went straight to the police <br />4 department, a career at the police department. When I <br />5 retired, I started serving -- even before, I was <br />6 serving on boards in Waikoloa and then a lot of <br />7 volunteer work. Just got to write an environmental <br />8 impact statement for the Laupahoehoe Experimental <br />9 Forest. Really interesting to be just involved in the <br />10 community other than wearing a uniform. <br />11 CHR. ONO: Harold? <br />12 MR. DOW: I'm Harold Dow. I live in <br />13 Kurtistown. I've been on the Big Island since '98. <br />14 I'm a retired medical doctor after 32 years in <br />15 emergency departments, originally in Texas and then <br />16 Washington State and then Hawaii. <br />17 I came to this commission as a result of a <br />18 <br />conversation I had <br />with one <br />of the department directors <br />19 <br />whom I had known in <br />another <br />capacity for a number of <br />20 <br />years. He said, <br />you know, "These <br />boards and <br />21 <br />commissions are <br />in need of help. <br />Why don't you take a <br />22 <br />look and see if <br />there's something <br />that interests you <br />23 and something that you think you could contribute to?" <br />24 And so applied and I got vetted, and here I am. <br />25 MR.
