Alonzo (after 4:15 p.m.), S. Bess (after 3:45 p.m.), M. Herkes, <br />R. Higashi, S. Irvine, D. Kurozawa (after 4:15 p.m.), G. Martin, J. Santangelo, <br />G. Yoshiyama (after 3:55 p.m.), Corporation Counsel R. Wurdeman, Counsel <br />Chris Yuen (until 5:15 p.m.) <br />Absent: K. Balog <br />And 4 members of the public in attendance. <br />RAY: The meeting is called to order at 3:23 p.m. This is the 1999-2000 <br />Charter Commission Special Meeting scheduled for May 26, 1999, 3:00 p.m. at the Hawaii <br />County Liquor Commission Conference Room. Let the record show that in attendance are <br />myself, Mr. Ray, Mr. Higashi, Ms. Herkes, Ms. Irvine, Mr. Martin and Mr. Santangelo. The <br />other members will either be present shortly or are excused. <br />Minutes. We have no minutes to approve for this meeting. <br />Financial Status Report. The Financial Status Report shows a balance of $27,465.62 out of the <br />$30,000 appropriated this year. <br />Communications. There are no communications. <br />Statements from the Public. There are no Statements from the Public. <br />Unfinished Business, A, Selection of Commission's Attorney. We have selected an attorney, <br />Mr. Yuen, who is present here today, and we have successfully negotiated a rate for his contract <br />of $125 an hour in general and $110 for meetings. We will be executing -, anticipating that we're <br />going to be executing a contract with him for this year for $25,000 to encumber those funds for <br />this year, for this fiscal year, so we'll be working on that. Congratulations, Mr. Yuen. Thank you <br />for being on board. <br />Just a note. Chris and I talked a little bit before the meeting this afternoon, and we do need to <br />discuss, at some point, and establish some procedures for as far as, you know, triggering his legal <br />research and opinions and whatever, and I think it would be appropriate if that goes through me, <br />as the Chairman, so in other words, we don't get, you know, various members saying do this, do <br />that or whatever, so if that's all right with you. And I already brought something to his attention <br />that I thought would be helpful to us, and that's this issue of political subdivisions or <br />1 <br />
