DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION Herbert Matayoshi, Mayor <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII Milton Hakoda, Director <br /> February 5, 1979 <br /> TO: CHARTER REVIEW COMMISSION <br /> FROM: • DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION <br /> SUBJECT: OVERVIEW <br /> The Department of Parks and Recreation is charged with the responsibili- <br /> ties of maintaining and operating recreational areas and facilities under <br /> County jurisdiction. It has, as another major function, the conducting of <br /> organized recreational activities. Senior citizens are provided, in addition <br /> to recreation, a nutrition service, a volunteer program and community service <br /> .employment. <br /> The State, traditionally, operates recreational areas which tend to <br /> preserve and enhance our natural resources. County, on the other hand, develops <br /> and operates facilities and programs for active recreation. <br /> In order to carry out these responsibilities, the department is organized <br /> into three (3) major divisions and seven (7) sections. The divisions consist <br /> of Parks Maintenance, Recreation, and Elderly Activities. The sections are <br /> Administration, Municipal Golf Course, County Band, Panaewa Zoo, Culture and <br /> Arts, Hoolulu Complex and Aquatics. <br /> The department operates and maintains about 140 facilities on 1,100 acres, <br /> including 50 neighborhood parks, 29 gymnasiums and recreation centers, 28 beach <br /> parks, 7 swim pools, a golf course, a zoo, an equestrian center, a drag strip, <br /> .25 AUI'UNI STREET • 11I10, HAWAII 96720 e TELEPHONE 961.-8311. <br /> COMM.
