ME YONA IJAGUE OF REPUBLICAN WO BN
P.O. BOX 3134 Y.dILUA^KONA, H4WAII 96740
JULY , 5, 1979
To SY;r_® Kimiaki Sakata, Cha{iivan
Hawaii County Charter Commission
Hilo., Hawaii.
The Kona League of Republican Women strongly protests the
recent action of the County Charter Commission which would give
Hilo a 4 member majority on a 7 member council , reducing Kona and
South Kohala to only 1 council member, as well as delaying until
1983 the reapportionment based on the 1980 census although the
federal law mandates making this reapportionment by April 1 , 1981 .
Further, the Commission proposes to have a special election in
November 1979 at a cost of at least $100,000 to approve this proposal.
The Kona League of Republican Women believes that this is
a patently unfair decision, involving great expense to the taxpayers.
If the plan to have a 9 member council is not to be implemented,
then we urge that no election be held and no change at all in the
make up of the Hawaii County Council be made until the mandated
reapportionment by April 1 , 1981 .
In protest therefore we sign this letter.
A - 1/
Mar iorie B.
