Plans to disassemble it are
disingenuous after such a huge community campaign to have this funding secured — for good reason. And, as you know,
there is a good maintenance backup provided without raiding the fund.
The mayor shouldn't balance the books on the backs of untold thousands of voting residents, especially over 60% of
them who supported this fund and the mandate provided by it. Not just once, but several times.
A successful program? Yes, indeed. Without it, we'd still be searching for funds to protect O'Oma in West Hawaii. Not
really because it would be, for a fourth or fifth time, up for development grabs instead of being a protected coastal park
for all to enjoy and as a buffer to the burgeoning development this region has seen and will continue to see. I'm sure the
residents of Ka'u, North Kohala and the rest of the island where lands have been preserved (supposedly in perpetuity)
agree with me wholeheartedly.
Please let the idea of weakening and diverting the all-important PONC fund. Undoing that effort makes a mockery of
democracy at a time when so many of us are reeling with the thought of losing environmental protections that help
make Hawai'I — and the world — a safe, healthy, unique place to live and visit.
Mahalo for standing strong against the effort to invade OUR land fund.
Sincerely,
Janice Palma-Glennie
P.O. box 48+9
Kaiua-Kona, Ijawai'i 967+5
1
Comm.
