Inouye, Chair
COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION
Hawaii State Legislature
Dear Chair Inouye and Committee members:
RE: SB 1298, RELATING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
(Highway 132, Kapoho Road)
Thank you for hearing SB 1298, and thank you also to Senator Ruderman, and
all the Big Island Senators, for keeping the focus on disaster recovery for lower Puna.
We appreciate all your hard work, and look forward to whatever assistance the State
can provide as we move forward.
To bring you up to date on Kapoho Road specifically, please know that Highway
132 has been identified as a #1 Priority. Planning is already underway. We are now
waiting for the six-month period of lava cessation to lapse, after which we can file our
formal application for construction. We fully expect that the Federal Government will
pick up the cost of rebuilding Highway 132.
Sincerely,
H6ajrryij.
