q
PARTNERS IN CARE
Oahu Continuums
Partners in Care is a coalition of Oahu's homeless service providers, government representatives and community
stakeholders working together in partnership to end homelessness.
Long -Term Assistance Pilot• •
• At Risk or •Kupuna
Skyrocketing housing costs are an especially serious threat to Hawaii's kupuna living on fixed
incomes. A Long -Term Rental Assistance Pilot Program for Kupuna can address the needs of
this especially vulnerable population. The program would provide rental assistance, on an
ongoing basis, to homeless elders and elders at imminent risk of homelessness. Partners in
Care proposes that the kupuna in the program would first pay 50% of their income for rent,
since these low income seniors would usually have Medicare and Food Stamps. The pilot
program would provide rental assistance of possibly $500 to $1,000/month. Partners in Care
supports $1.5 million appropriation for this pilot program.
The Long -Term Rental Assistance Pilot Program would be an important step forward to
assisting kupuna out of homelessness. It also would prevent kupuna from falling into
homelessness, usually due to the inability to pay the high market rents in Hawaii.
Thank you for your consideration of this pilot program for very vulnerable kupuna.
Partners in Care is the Oahu Continuum of Care working to end homelessness. Our 2019
legislative priorities includ ae ae wide range of actions to end homelessness: from homeless
services to the prevention of homelessness to the creation of affordable rental housing units.
Contact Person:
Betty Lou Larson
Legislative Liaison
Catholic Charities Hawaii
bettylou.larson(a)_catholiccharitieshawaii.org
808-373-0356
w, ice- fit-
SNS `4 AFP
Contact for (PIC) Advocacy Committee: Chair.
