Okabe <br />Deputy Director <br />Managing Director <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />County of Hawai‘i <br /> <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT <br />345 Kekūanāoʻa Street, Suite 41 • Hilo, Hawai‘i 96720 <br /> (808) 961-8083 · Fax (808) 961-8086 <br />Email: cohdem@hawaiicounty.gov <br /> <br /> <br />April 15, 2019 <br /> <br /> <br />NEWS RELEASE <br /> <br />Contact: Amelia Kajiyama, Civil Engineer III, County of Hawaiʻi Department of <br />Environmental Management, Wastewater Division ((961-8587) <br /> <br />Department Of Environmental Management, Wastewater Division, to Conduct <br />Sewer “Smoke Test” April 22 - 26, 2019, in Moirton Area in Pāpaʽikou <br /> <br />Department of Environmental Management work crews will be on Old Māmalahoa <br />Highway (Road D, Road H, Road G, Road C, Road B, Road A, and Pāpaʽikou Road) in <br />Pāpaʽikou on April 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26, 2019, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., <br />weather permitting (no heavy rain). <br /> <br />The crews will be doing a “Smoke Test” survey to assist inspectors in identifying <br />connections where rain water (inflow) and groundwater (infiltration) may enter the <br />sanitary sewer system. <br /> <br />Please note that the smoke used in testing, which will be seen coming from the vent <br />stacks on houses, sewer manholes, or holes in the ground, is non-toxic, non-staining, <br />has no odor, is white to gray in color, and poses no fire hazard. <br /> <br />The smoke should not enter homes or businesses unless there are defects in the <br />plumbing system. We advise home owners to pour a gallon of water into each floor <br />drain prior to the testing. <br /> <br />Traffic delays within the Moirton area may occur. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />County of Hawai‘i is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer <br />
