Fire Chief <br />involving the department; be someone who can make <br />difficult decisions and stand behind those decisions. <br />• Be a self-starter who has the vitality and energy to <br />motivate and lead others; be someone who seeks and <br />enjoys a challenge. <br />Characteristics, Traits, <br />and Abilities <br />oNAM <br />• A results -oriented manager who will hold true to the <br />Mission of the Department and who can work <br />effectively through others to accomplish the work of <br />the department and all of its divisions. <br />• A leader who is flexible to adapt to any situation. A <br />leader who is honest and of upmost integrity. A <br />leader who is committed to the safety and security of <br />all members of the Fayetteville Fire Department. <br />• An advocate of teamwork, the Chief must ensure <br />open and honest communications with the City <br />Manager and be forthcoming with information the <br />Manager needs to be effective in this work. The Chief <br />must be able to work in a dynamic, fast -paced <br />environment, and for a City Manager with very high <br />expectations of staff. <br />• A Chief who is willing and able to work under sometimes <br />stressful conditions; providing strong and effective <br />leadership in such situations is necessary, as is a <br />commitment to employee development and training. <br />• The Chief should be an anticipatory leader with a <br />vision of the future. A leader who provides vision and <br />then delegates and empowers staff to achieve <br />department goals and objectives. <br />• A proponent for strategic planning and achieving the <br />strategic planning goals as set forth in the <br />department's strategic plan and offer other innovative <br />ideas to achieve the goals of the department. <br />• A proponent of diversity and the understanding of the <br />importance of having the workforce reflect the <br />community it serves and the experience and commitment <br />to further diversifying the workforce at all ranks. <br />• Be an articulate and an effective communicator, both <br />orally and in writing; be someone who is comfortable <br />listening to and talking with a wide spectrum of <br />people, often serving as the "face" of the department; <br />create an environment where staff members are <br />completely comfortable seeking out the Chief to <br />discuss potentially difficult situations or problems. <br />• A manager with proven ability to communicate <br />effectively orally, in person, by telephone and in <br />writing through documents and computerized <br />technologies. <br />• A leader who is level-headed, listens to staff, agrees <br />to disagree and does not hold a grudge. <br />• A leader who has the ability to form and maintain <br />effective relationships with elected officials, <br />co-workers and customers. A leader who desires to <br />know staff, their families and is respectful of the <br />tenure of many of the department's employees. <br />• Residency is required. <br />
