Rodrigo Romo
COUNTY CLERK Before the
COUNTY 'OF HAWAI'I County Council of the County of Hawai'i
RECEIVED Tuesday, July 7th @ 13:00
Time 0:45 apt By dri0 Hawai'i County Building.
Date .JUL 0 4 2020
In consideration of
Resolution 678-20
RELATING TO THE CALL TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES AND
PUBLIC UTILITIES OPERATING IN THE HAWAI'I COUNTY TO CERASE THE
BUILDOUT OF 5G WIRELESS INFRASTRUCTURE UNTIL SUCH TECHNOLOGIES
HAVE BEEN PROVEN THROUGH INDEPENDENT RESEARCH AND TESTING TO
BE SAFE TO HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Chair Kierkiewicz, Vice Chair Lee Loy and members of the Council:
While I appreciate the intent of Resolution 678-20 I strongly oppose its passing in its current
form. To express concern over the potential health issues with this new technology (5G) is
understandable and valid, however, the way the current resolution is written makes no indication
as to who is to decide what is considered to be a valid"independent research and testing". Who
will determine what studies are valid? Many people who oppose new technologies also oppose
studies showing favorable results of such technology claiming that those conducting the studies
are "biased"because the studies were funded by the company producing the technology.
In the list of articles referred to in the website listed on the resolution there is a number of
articles citing potential health effects caused by exposure to conventional WiFi signals, is the
county prepared to ban all WiFi routers from the county too?
Every member of the Council probably has a cell phone operating in 4G, 4LG. One can also find
a long list of"studies" listing potential health effects caused by exposure to those frequencies,
yet we all use them on a daily basis.
I propose the resolution either be eliminated from consideration until language is added that
better defines what is considered an approved "Independent Research Study". While we should
be cautious and concerned about the health of our population, we should not fall for alarmist and
extreme measures that will be difficult to undo and have the potential to mitigate technological
advances that are strongly needed in our Island.
Mahalo forY our consideration.
