Honorable Chair Aaron Chung and County Council Members,
This letter is being submitted in support of Resolution 680 20,introduced by
Councilmembers Poindexter and Kierkiewicz,A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING AND URGING
EQUITY,INCLUSION,AND SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE PRINCIPLES INTO
COVID-19 RELATED RECOVERY INITIATIVES FOR HAWAII COUNTY.
On the evening of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King,United States Senator Robert
Kennedy eloquently framed a moment of national distress with these words, "what we need in the
United States...is love and wisdom and compassion toward one another and a feeling of justice toward
those in our country who still suffer."
Councilmember's Poindexter and Kierkiewicz are using their leadership on our island to
address, in this our own epidemic-time,a similar,local effort.Using the approach of"principles...into
COVID-1,9 related recovery initiatives for Hawaii County"these leaders are rightfully framing the
larger picture for which essential decisions,regarding recovery initiatives, will need to be made-
specifically,how these impactful decisions affect women. This Resolution 680 20 provides a
philosophy upon which smaller,project-specific decisions can be made. Ensuring an overall alignment
with the"justice principles" this County will be well served by adoption of this Resolution because
your decisions trickle down into lived experiences,as you can fathom by the statistics presented in the
Resolution-lived experiences born by the women of our island.
I see this Resolution as consistent with the work already being done on our island.The
language of"supporting and urging...social and economic justice principles..."is especially appealing

to me. Using the strengths within our community,with an eye on the educational attainment
channels and economic support channels offered to women,Resolution 680 20 can further solidify
initiatives through which Hawaii Island women make change and are supported in order to achieve
upward mobility. Through this resolution, the role of the Hawaii County Committee on the Status of
Women can be used as a primary lever,by which the County can achieve important assurances that are
"urged"by this excellent Resolution 680 20. Using the strategic lens encouraged by this Resolution,
the"principles of equity,inclusion,social and economic justice" and" the vulnerability women and
girls face in this pandemic"can be confidently addressed.
I warmly support Resolution 680 20,co-sponsored by Councilmembers Poindexter and
Kierkiewicz and I encourage this County Council to adopt Resolution 680 20.
