Home My WebLink AboutCOM 0986.286 2018-2020 The 5G Crisis is Now in Puna Dear neighbors, You may have heard about the rollout of the next generation in wireless technology, known as the "5G rollout." This rollout is already bringing to our community several issues important to every family: safety, security, privacy, property values and health. We are reaching out to you so you can make your feelings known to our local officials. The placement of powerful wireless antennas throughout our neighborhoods is a significant security and privacy issue. For those of us who have "smart homes" this increases the possibility that our activities will be monitored, and data collected and marketed. From a damage-control standpoint most utility poles were not designed to withstand the addition of hundreds of pounds of additional equipment, and severe weather events could cause damage to our homes and property. Perhaps most troubling, many government leaders, scientists and medical researchers are raising questions about the long-term health impacts of exposure to the radiation from these antennas. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) safety exposure guidelines for radiation from these antennas have not been updated in more than 20 years, and recent peer-reviewed, independent studies have confirmed what previous studies have shown: chronic low-level exposure to wireless radiation can cause serious health problems including cancer. Because of these concerns several European countries have banned this technology all together and in Sacramento, California, where the entire city is wired for 5G, there are lawsuits challenging the invasion into neighborhoods like yours or mine. National awareness of these issues may also trigger declines in property value for homeowners whose property is located in close proximity to these new antennas. White we all want to be connected, no one wants to live in a home with a potential health threat in their front yard. This "rollout" has already begun in the Puna area with Verizon Wireless, while we were preoccupied with the COVID-19 crisis, and we believe you should be informed and make your feelings known to the local officials.
