I am writing to ask your support in passing Bill 178, encouraging property owners to preserve and restore forest
areas.
Though there is already a forest dedication law in place,'it is not at all sufficient. It was passed 16 years
ago and yet only 129 forest dedications have resulted.
Bill 178 would allow food crops and some non-native species (but not harmful invasives), and
would allow dedication even if land is covered by lava.
Bill 178 would also set lower taxes with no waiting period. This would encourage owners to commit to the
work of preservation and restoration.
Hawaii deeply needs healthy forests to grow food, slow climate change, provide habitat for native species,
support native Hawaiian culture, and provide places to refresh our spirits. Please pass Bill 178!1
