I support Bill 178. This legislation would help protect our watershed and native forests by creating three
native forest designations. The bill would also amend the dedication process for forest preservation and
establish a process for forest restoration activities within the Hawaii County Code.
Hawai'i is the Endangered Species capital of the world, yet our native culture, economy, and the health of
our citizens depend upon an intact natural environment.
Decades ago a similar bill to protect native forest by providing tax incentives to do so disappeared into the
ethers. I'm hoping that this bill will help correct what's continued to go wrong since that time and that our
council will expand upon this effort in the future to insure that our forests and the flora and fauna within
them survive intact for generations and forever.
Mahalo for supporting Bill 178.
