RE: Testimony of Support for Resolution 692-20
Aloha e Councilmembers Kierkiewicz and Keohokapu-Lee Loy:
I am writing to encourage the Committee on Governmental Relations& Economic Development and the County
Council to support Resolution 692-20 that aims to adopt and support the 'Aina Aloha Economic Futures (AAEF)
Initiative.
I signed on a personal supporter of the declaration and have engaged in its ongoing community process.This
initiative is a must as we will need to work together to rebuild our economy.As we create policy, receive federal
funding,work on collaborative efforts to work build a more resilient economy, we need to have a shared values
statement on Hawaii County and across the State. The shared values provided in the declaration will create a
common path for our economic recovery moving foward, critical towards the success in evaluating our current
economic sectors, creating new industries, re-imagining a thriving workforce and more!
In the current phase of the'Aina Aloha Economic Futures Initiative, I facilitated a small business sector meeting of
community leaders.This meeting and about a dozen others,took place over a week,to share proposals on how
we can create a resilient economy. Now, individuals across the state can provide feedback on over 160 proposals
submitted to AAEF,that can result in future policy, programs, projects, and community led initiatives that will
support sustainable economic recovery efforts in Hawaii. Overall,this amazing work provides public evidence to
community outreach being done to brainstorm economic recovery,that frankly,the State has failed to showcase
under the newly established Hawai'i Community and Economic Recovery Navigator.
The County of Hawaii can take a leadership role in economic recovery,for our county and the State, by adopting
and supporting AAEF and working with community leaders and organizations to implement recommendations
from this important work. It is simple and there is already community buy-in of thousands of individuals. I humbly
ask for your support on Res. 692-20 and would like to publicly mahalo the initial 14 collaborative authors of this
initiative, especially those that are our neighbors, 'ohana, and friends who represented our County.
