Subject: July 22nd Council Hearing - Opposition to Factory Built Housing in Bill 179
Dear honorable members of the council,
My name is Cory Anderson. I am a union carpenter and long time resident of Kailua-Kona in district 8. I am writing to express my
opposition to including appendix L"Factory Built Housing" in the proposed ordinance. I believe that this appendix will give an
unfair advantage to FBH manufacturers that is unnecessary and dangerous. Factory Built Housing already has the advantage of
being able to exploit low cost labor to produce a barely passable product for maximum corporate profit at the cost of working
class families. Practices like these don't even benefit small or medium size contractors as they will compete with each other and
make the same relative margin on a project. Instead it takes money directly out of the hands of trade workers that now more
than ever are a pillar in the state economy. The beneficiaries are the wealthiest national and multi-national developers.
In the interest of protecting the middle class in Hawaii and maintaining a fair playing field for trade workers, I request that
appendix L and all references to FBH be removed from the proposed ordinance.
Thank you,
•
