HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0989.069 2018-2020 From: Rebekah Gillette Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2020 2:24 AM COUNTY CLERK To: Council Testimony COUNTY OF HAWAI'I Subject: Support of Bill 179 RECEIVED Time 2: 4aM By dO Date JUL 2 12020 I am writing in support of Bill 179. Both of the appendices of the Bill demonstrate a recognition of, and appreciation for progressive options to our island's housing crisis and the need to provide our residents with attainable housing solutions. Given the current lack of inventory of affordable housing and the anticipated growth of this deficit, it is imperative that we identify and employ a multitude of viable housing solutions to meet the diverse and expansive needs of our residents. The County needs to take a leadership stand on working to serve the community with an affordable housing option. The Carpenters Union protest against the concept of manufactured homes is creating a gap for finding solutions to our housing crisis. Contractors and the union construction companies do not build for consumers just looking for a toe hold into homeownership. No one is building homes under 200k due to it not being cost-effective. Factory-built housing is a viable and affordable option for this segment of our population that needs housing they can afford. Factory-built housing will not be a solution for everyone, but when people can get into the lower rung of homeownership, they have hope to reach for the next rung. Please help us find a solution for our community by passing Bill 179. Comm. No. 69 Ref.To: Pi COAG. Ref. Date 7/21/1020 1
