I am a home owner and avocado/banana farmer of 3 acres off Kaloko in Kona. I always have the need for people to live and work
here on my land, helping me and helping themselves at the same time.
Hawaii is one of the sanest and calmest places to live,especially now in these trying times of Covid.There are many people out there
willing to work and contribute but who do not have the resources to purchase a standard American home or condo.Yet the island
lacks sufficient affordable housing, or,for that matter, sufficient long-term rental housing.
I would very much like to convert an acre of my land (it's already fallow and overgrown) into a place for a couple of tiny homes, so
' people could have a decent place to live and work with me to help create a sustainable plot of land with a food forest, native trees
and other elements that will make Hawaii a healthier, restored place to live.
Won't you please consider the benefits of what these little homes can offer individuals, small families,fit and healthy elders who
may lack economic resources but have musclepower and will to make a good life and create new versions of productive,small scale
communities?
There are many American values about what makes a home and a community,that are stuck, like barnacles, on the pier of the past.
We are past the past now.We are living in a frightening present with a wildly uncertain future. It's a time when every day is laced
with an undercurrent of fear(health, disease, changing climate/weather, public safety) and our ability to help others, help ourselves
and sustain these islands, is dependent on restructuring our way of seeing what homes are and how land resources can be most
effectively used.
As a home and land steward, I entreat you to make it possible for others to join in the dream of making a healthier Hawaii.
