Subject: 7/22/20 Council hearing - opposition to factory built-housing, Bill 179
Aloha council members,
As a local carpenter of over 30 years, I am opposing the following bill, Bill 179 and request your consideration for
opposing as well for our local carpenters, our community welfare and local businesses. Hilo carpenters have been
struggling for years obtaining jobs and consistent work in our area. If this bill is passed, it will worsen our job
opportunities for current carpenters as well as our future carpenters. The passing of this bill will affect many locals
and force them to relocate or try to find work in other trades or be unemployed. It may affect our educational
programs because local carpenters won't be needed, local businesses will suffer with lack of sales of building
supplies and increase unemployment. Don't we have enough unemployment thanks to COVID-19.
As COVID has taken a hit to our local, state and national economy, so will the passing of this bill. The local
businesses are already struggling to survive with COVID and our local carpenters are struggling as well. Please keep
our local people working and local businesses thriving.
