Please do not to approve Resolution 678, which urges the wireless industry not to roll out 5G wireless on the Big Island. This
proposed legislation has no weight in law, but I believe it still be harmful against technological growth. The wireless industry will
think twice about doing any upgrades, which will put Hawaii Island at technological disadvantage compared_to other places.
The rural areas of Hawaii Island will be particularly impacted compared to more urbanized areas. It is simply too costly to roll out
hard wired connectivity solutions, such as fiber -optics, in these areas. Hawaiian Telcom has started to roll out FTTH in some rural
areas, but this is due in part to the Federal subsidies they've received. If the FCC CAF I and II grants were not available, these areas
would be still connecting to the Internet via slower DSL, or dial-up, because the return on investment is not there.
In short, 5G will help address the gaps in broadband connectivity on the Big Island where its not feasible for Hawaiian Telcom, or
Spectrum, to do fiber-optic cable upgrades. Please vote against this resolution, as the opponents against this technology are using
conspiracy theories to push their cause.
